Online Casino ID Checks in the UK: What to Expect

Last reviewed: 24 September 2026. Online casino ID verification in Great Britain starts with the checks required before play. This guide explains when age and identity checks must happen, which documents may be requested, and what to do if additional checks delay a withdrawal. It is general information, not legal advice or a review of any individual operator.

In brief: a remote gambling business must verify a customer’s identity, including name, address and date of birth, before allowing them to gamble. Age must be checked before a customer can deposit, access a free-to-play gambling game or gamble. Before taking a deposit, an operator should explain what identity information or documents may be needed, when it may be requested and how to provide it.

CasinoGauge does not promise that a check or withdrawal will be completed by a particular time. The Gambling Commission says electronic checks may be instant, while document checks can take longer; it does not set one universal completion time.

Why an online casino asks for identity information

Identity checks help a gambling business confirm that a customer is old enough to gamble, establish who controls the account, identify self-excluded customers and meet legal or regulatory duties. A business may be able to verify details electronically against other records. If those checks are not enough, it may ask for supporting documents.

The Gambling Commission’s public guidance gives passports, driving licences and household bills as examples of documents a business could request. The Commission does not prescribe one universal document list: the information needed depends on the operator’s checks and the circumstances. Read the operator’s own explanation before sending anything.

When should checks happen?

Under the Gambling Commission’s remote rules, a licensee must obtain and verify information to establish a customer’s identity before permitting them to gamble. At minimum, this includes the customer’s name, address and date of birth. Age verification must happen before the customer can deposit funds, access free-to-play versions of gambling games offered by the licensee, or gamble with money, a free bet or a bonus.

Before allowing a customer to deposit, the operator should explain what identity documents or other information may be needed, the circumstances in which it may be requested, and the form and method for providing it. If you cannot find this information, ask the operator through its official support channel before you deposit.

Why might a check appear later?

Some checks can require extra information, and a business may have a legal obligation to request information at a later point. The Commission says that if more information is needed before a withdrawal, for example for anti-money-laundering checks, it should be requested promptly.

However, a withdrawal request must not trigger a requirement for extra information as a condition of withdrawal when the licensee could reasonably have requested it earlier. The Commission says a delay caused by insufficient identity verification may breach Licence Condition 17 where the operator could have completed the check sooner. The details matter: identity checks, a separate legal obligation, payment processing and an unresolved complaint are not automatically the same issue.

A practical identity-check checklist

Use this checklist as a private reminder. It runs in your browser only: CasinoGauge does not receive or save your selections. It is not a licence check or a guarantee that an operator is safe. You can compare an operator and website domain in the searchable Gambling Commission business register.

If you are asked for documents

  1. Check that you are on the operator’s genuine website or app. Match the licensed business and domain in the Gambling Commission register; our UK casino licence and domain guide explains the comparison.
  2. Read the request carefully. Ask which information is missing, what it is being used to verify, how to submit it securely and whether anything else is needed. Do not send passwords, one-time sign-in codes or payment-card security codes as proof of identity.
  3. Keep a copy of the request and your response. Avoid sending identity documents to an address or link you cannot verify from the operator’s official account or website.
  4. If the request is connected with a withdrawal, ask whether the check could reasonably have been requested earlier and whether a separate legal obligation requires it now. The operator may not be able to share every detail of an anti-money-laundering review, but you can ask what action is required from you and how to complain.

If your withdrawal is delayed

Contact the operator using its formal complaints route and describe the timeline, the information already supplied and the outstanding request. Ask for the reason for the delay, the specific next step and how to escalate the complaint. Keep copies of relevant messages and terms as they appeared at the time.

If the operator’s final response does not resolve the dispute, follow the independent dispute resolution (ADR) instructions in its complaints procedure. Our guide to resolving an online casino complaint explains the stages. The Gambling Commission regulates operators but does not decide individual gambling disputes or recover money for customers.

Common questions about casino ID checks

Can a UK online casino ask for a passport or proof of address?

A gambling business may ask for identity documents when electronic checks do not provide enough information. The Gambling Commission lists passports, driving licences and household bills as examples. It does not set a single required document list for every operator.

Can an online casino wait until I withdraw to verify me?

The operator must establish identity before allowing you to gamble and should explain possible information requests before you deposit. A withdrawal must not be made conditional on additional information that the operator could reasonably have requested earlier. A separate legal obligation may still require information at a later time.

How long does online casino verification take?

There is no single time that applies to every check. The Gambling Commission says electronic verification may be instant and document checks may take longer. Ask the operator for the current status and any specific missing item.

What if I see a casino advertised as needing no verification?

Do not treat that claim as proof that the site is suitable for customers in Great Britain. Remote licensees have age and identity verification duties. Check the business and the exact website domain in the Gambling Commission register before sharing personal information or using an account.
